They say that everything in life is a choice. It’s true that sometimes fate dishes out something that is completely beyond your control and is far from your own choosing. Even in such instances, choice is something that you exercise; you either roll with the punches or you let them knock you down.
When it comes to happiness, choice remains a major player. People will often say that happiness is a feeling. If this is the case, then, like any other emotion, it is fleeting and dependent on circumstances. There are others, however, who have adopted happiness as a disposition and have committed to remain positive no matter the circumstances.
In the words of author and poet Mildred Barthel, “Happiness is a conscious choice, not an automatic response.” Many other famous figures throughout history echo this sentiment, encouraging people to improve the quality of their days and just choose happiness. Some well-known choose happiness quotes are:
“Happiness depends upon ourselves.” – Aristotle
“Remember that happiness is a way of travel — not a destination.” – Roy M. Goodman
“Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” — Margaret Lee Runbeck
“We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same.” — Carlos Castañeda
Of course, when your personality is not inherently inclined to be sunny, happiness is even more of a conscious choice. As one wise, yet anonymous sage said, “Happiness is a choice that requires effort at times.” Nevertheless, even when it does take effort, it’s always the better path to take.
